MULTIPLE DESTINATIONS WHILE ON TRIP NOW POSSIBLE ON UBER APP

...the new feature makes it easier for riders to add multiple stops along the route

Uber Tanzania has rolled out Multi Destinations - a new feature that makes it easy for riders to add multiple stops along their route. This means that riders who want to take a trip with multiple stops can have a more ideal experience.

Commenting on the new feature, Uber Country Manager in Uganda, Alfred Msemo said “Riders and drivers do not have to edit destinations while on trip where multiple stops are involved. The feature also benefits drivers as the pricing on the app will now be updated as the new destinations are updated. The Multi- destinations feature also benefits the forward dispatch process as updated destinations will now be included in the forward dispatch process.”

To access the feature, riders will have to be logged on to their Uber applications and request for their rides. To choose their adventure, riders will then tap the “+” next to the “Where To” destination box to add stop(s) at any point before or during their trips. Riders can also add change or remove a stop while on the go, all they need to do is to add, change or remove the destination from the on trip screen accessible on the app.

“Whether you’re heading for a weekend away and want to grab your friend en route to the airport, or going home after dinner, and need to drop off the party on the way, it’s easier than ever to pick up and drop off your friends along the way,” concluded Mr. Msemo.

Here is how the feature works:

UBER ISSUES SAFETY GUIDELINES TO RIDERS ACROSS EAST AFRICA

Uber has launched a safety campaign that gives guidelines that encourage all users to take advantage of the company’s innovative technology that has enabled the app to foster the safety of riders and drivers. The safety guidelines are now available to all users in Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam and Kampala.

The safety guidelines highlight Uber’s commitment to creating simple, intuitive technology that not only makes the lives of riders and drivers easier, but also keeps everyone safe throughout their journeys.

Riders have been advised to countercheck the vehicle’s registration number with the one that pops up on their phone, as well as the driver’s picture before getting into a vehicle. Drivers have been taken through safety training, besides having access to a toll free line through which they can report any safety threats.

Uber’s Country Manager for Tanzania Alfred Msemo said: “Uber has been providing safe reliable transport for Tanzanians year. We have been trusted to move people around every day. Through our innovative technology Uber has integrated safety into our service from beginning to end: before a passenger even gets into the car, throughout the journey and after they have reached their destination.”

The safety tips also encourage riders to always remain on the app as the trip is GPS tracked from start to finish so that they can see their route, location of the car, and if the driver is headed the right way throughout the journey. Uber’s app also has a  feature also allows riders share their details of individual trips in real time, including route and expected time of arrival with family or friends.

Earlier this year, Uber also published community guidelines in East Africa, a document that aims to provide guidance on how drivers and riders should behave and treat each other during a trip on the app.

See below safety measures that riders are encouraged to follow:

In-app Help: This is aa tool is designed to help riders get a prompt response to their queries in the shortest time possible. The support system can be accessed by navigating to the “Help’’ section on the menu, which helps riders and driver-partners alike to communicate their concerns they might have during a trip and get an instant response.

Sharing Trip Details: Uber’s technology has made it possible for all trips to be tracked using GPS. While en route the rider is able to monitor their own trip in the app as well as share their Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) with their loved ones. This will help friends and family keep track of where they are on the trip and they can do this without even downloading the Uber app!

Know your ride: Riders should always take the time to review the safety features available to them in the app, remember Uber rides can only be requested through the Uber app, so users should never accept street hail solicitations from those claiming to be with Uber.

When riders are ready to request a ride, it is important for them to avoid spending unnecessary time outside alone with their phone in their hand. Instead, it best for them to wait indoors until the app shows their driver has arrived.

Know your driver: When a driver accepts a riders request, the rider is able to see the drivers first name, photo, license plate number, type of vehicle as well as the vehicle colour. You’ll be able to see this from within the app itself – on the map. The rider should always make sure that those match before they enter the vehicle and ensure they ask for the drivers name when they open the door.

Follow Intuition: When using Uber the rider should be aware of their surroundings, if they feel like something's not right they should trust their instincts and use their best judgement. Riders should be cautious when sharing any personal information and should always confirm that the driver-partner is in fact the one they saw on the app, and if they ever feel they're in an emergency situation, they are advised to alert the local emergency services immediately.

Give Feedback: Riders should always give feedback on how their trip went. This helps improve the Uber experience for everyone, maintain a high quality service and provide accountability. Uber has a 24/7 global support team which reviews the feedback and follows up with appropriate action regarding reports of conduct that violates Uber’s Community Guidelines.

Maxcom IPO reported in final stages

TANZANIANS and foreign investors’ appetite for share sale of rapid growing firms will soon be tested again as Maxcom Africa, an ICT integration company, nears its landmark initial public offering.

Maxcom Africa Executive Director, Juma Rajabu said at a meeting with editors and senior reporters from mainstream media in Dar es Salaam over the weekend that they were in final stages of preparations for the initial public offering in line with a mandatory requirement for telecommunications companies to sell at least a 25 per cent stake on the Dar es Salaam exchange to boost domestic ownership.

He however declined to provide further details saying they were subject to Capital Market and Security Agency (CMSA) approval.

The IPO is expected to test again domestic and foreign investors’ appetite for IPOs after they were enticed by share sell of Vodacom Tanzania, a leading telecommunication company in Tanzania which offloaded 25 per cent shares through IPO in March and listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange last week. Vodacom placed 560 million shares at 850/- each in Tanzania’s biggest initial public offering (IPO), raising 476bn/- ($213 million).

Maxcom Africa PLC is an ICT integration firm owned by native Tanzanians with extensive operations in East African Community (EAC) member states of Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda.

It provides automated fare collection system for public transport such as Dar es Salaam’s Bus Rapid Transit and Kigongo Busisi Ferry in Sengerama, Mwanza, and electronic health services in terms of mobile money and card payment system for hospitals including Muhimbili National Hospital and Bugando referral hospital.

Maxcom also provides utility and service payments where customers pay electricity and water bills through their agents or mobile telephones. It acquired Public Listed Company status in June in preparations to float its shares at the stock market.

The chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, Prof Samwel Wangwe, said in June that Maxcom had filed its prospectus to the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) and was waiting for approval from the authority.

He said the listing at the stock market would enable the company operate in compliance with the country’s laws and regulations in line with the Electronic and Postal Communication Act of 2010 and the Finance Act 2016, which require communication operators to offload 25 per cent of their shares to the public.

The IPO is also expected to boost the firm expansion ambition in Africa, he said adding they plan by 2020 to provide not less than 100,000 employments in and outside the country.

Msemo.

Shilling slides slightly in seven months

The shilling has marginally depreciated by 2.5 per cent since the beginning of the year. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) data showed yesterday that the shilling dropped to 2,242/35 yesterday against 2,186/21 at the beginning of this year.

The drop margin, according to money experts, was acceptable since it has insignificant impact on businesses and terming it as somewhat stable fluctuation.

“The market has seen the greenback stabilized against the shilling due to matching levels of demand and supply,” CRDB said in its Market highlight of yesterday.

However, last Friday, the greenback maintained its position against the shilling. The USD/TZS ended the session at the same levels of 2,220/60.
